Caprioni Portable Toilets' story started from humble beginnings. Dominick Caprioni founded Caprioni Family Septic, Inc. in 1981. He noticed that there was a lack of portable toilets in Belleplain, NJ, and in the South Jersey area. So, with just over 100 portable toilets, he started his own company. 100 turned into 200 and then 200 turned into 500. Eventually, the business amassed more than 2,500 units. Our portable restrooms are available in four different sizes: single, double, medium, and large.
Although he was heavily involved in the family business growing up, when work slowed down in the winters, Caprioni would keep busy by doing construction projects. By the time he decided to make his own trailers, Caprioni had developed the skills to do it. He worked with his father-in-law, Gene Bailey, who also had a construction background, and the guys on his team who had built some of the company’s tanks and transport trailers, and came up with a design. “I have a welder right here and we started from the frame up,” Caprioni says.
Today he’s got two large shops and three people who concentrate on building trailers during the slow months. “We only build in the winter,” he says. “We’ll start around October and finish the last one up in June.” The number of units they build each year depends on demand and the condition of their fleet. “Every year we get another two or three customers for them,” he says. “So we figure out what’s going on. We always upgrade the older ones or get rid of [them] and build new ones.”
Caprioni carries the homey theme into the interior. “It looks like you’re in a house,” he said. The ceiling is tongue-and-groove cedar, the walls are half-wood paneling and half-marbled plastic laminate, and the floors are linoleum in either a stone or wood grain pattern. Some units have pedestal sinks, others have marble or stone laminate vanities. All have heat and air conditioning.
They’re used by beachfront swimming and camping facilities as well as restaurants that set up Tiki bars and eateries along the beach during the summer. They’re also requested by municipal customers who place them along boardwalks. A few units are kept aside for weddings, outdoor parties and seafood festivals. At the end of the busy season, most are brought back to the yard and stored for the winter.
